Inspect road flares for expiry date and physical condition
ContextRoad flares carry a printed expiry date, typically 3–4 years from manufacture. An expired flare may fail to ignite or burn inconsistently, leaving you invisible to oncoming traffic. Examine each flare for moisture damage, cracked end caps, or a deteriorated striker surface. If any single flare is within 6 months of its expiry date, replace the entire pack — a mixed-age set creates false security. A fresh 3-pack costs $8–$15. Store flares in a small waterproof pouch or sealed zip-lock bag inside the kit to prevent moisture intrusion during wet weather.
