Locate and test every bypass valve before touching any component
ContextMost filter housings and softeners have a dedicated bypass valve or lever. Turn it to bypass and confirm that household water still flows normally — this proves the bypass is functional and you won't lose water pressure while servicing. A seized or broken bypass valve discovered mid-service can leave your home without water for hours while you wait for a plumber. Label each valve with a permanent marker if it isn't already, and photograph the configuration before you start.
