Most upgrades fail silently at two steps: forgetting the authenticator app transfer (locking you out of every 2FA account) and skipping the iCloud sign-out before the wipe (making the old phone worthless for trade-in). This sequenced checklist treats verification as a hard gate — transfer and confirm before you erase. Enable and verify cloud photo backup — confirm every photo is uploaded before proceeding

iCloud Photos: Settings → [your name] → iCloud → Photos → confirm 'iCloud Photos' is on and the sync status shows 'Updated' — not 'Uploading X items remaining.' The feature toggle and the sync status are separate checks: 'iCloud Photos: On' means the feature is enabled, not that your current library is synced. Syncing can take minutes to hours depending on library size and connection speed. By default, iCloud Photos limits uploads to Wi-Fi only — connect to Wi-Fi before initiating the backup. Google Photos (Android): tap your profile icon and look for 'Photo Library is backed up' or check for a 'Waiting for Wi-Fi' or 'Backing up X items' status. Video files are particularly large and are often the last to complete — verify videos are uploading, not just photos.

Perform a full device backup to cloud — iCloud Backup (iPhone) or Google One Backup (Android)

iCloud Backup: Settings → [your name] → iCloud → iCloud Backup → Back Up Now. This captures app data, device settings, home screen layout, purchased app list, messages, and ringtones. Note that iCloud Backup does not back up content already stored in iCloud (iCloud Photos, iCloud Drive documents) — it captures what those services don't. The backup completion message shows the timestamp of the last successful backup — verify this is from minutes ago before relying on it. Android (Google One): Settings → Google → Backup → Back up now. Backs up app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS messages. Important limitation: not all Android apps support Google Backup — banking apps and some messaging apps exclude their data due to security restrictions. Check the backup summary screen for any apps listed as 'Not backed up.'

Export or transfer your authenticator app accounts BEFORE wiping the old phone

This is the step most likely to produce serious consequences if skipped. TOTP-based 2FA codes (Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, and similar apps) are generated from cryptographic seeds stored only on the device. They are not backed up to iCloud or Google One by default — backing up 2FA seeds to the cloud would undermine their security purpose. If you wipe a phone without transferring authenticator accounts, you are locked out of every account using that app for 2FA until you complete account recovery for each one, which may require a backup phone number, backup codes, or support contact. Transfer options: Google Authenticator supports 'Export Accounts' → QR code → scan with new phone. Microsoft Authenticator has a cloud backup option that can be enabled in advance. Authy offers multi-device sync enabled in settings — the most convenient option. 1Password and similar password managers that store TOTP sync automatically with your vault. Before wiping the old phone: verify the new phone shows the same rotating codes as the old phone for at least two or three accounts simultaneously.

Back up messaging apps that don't sync to standard cloud backups — WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram

WhatsApp: Settings → Chats → Chat Backup → Back Up Now. iPhone backs up to iCloud; Android backs up to Google Drive. WhatsApp backups have been end-to-end encrypted since 2022 — you'll be prompted to create an encryption password during backup. Store this password somewhere accessible — it's required to restore. Signal: Signal does not back up message history to iCloud or Google by default, by design. Signal's 'Transfer or Reset Account' feature (Settings → Account → Transfer Account) transfers message history directly between two devices using a QR code — both phones must be present and connected simultaneously for this to work. Telegram: non-secret chat history is stored in Telegram's cloud and restores automatically when you sign in on the new device. Secret chats are device-local and cannot be transferred.

Perform a local backup to a computer as a secondary safety net

A local backup provides a recovery option independent of cloud connectivity. iPhone on Mac: connect via cable → open Finder → select the phone → Back Up Now. iPhone on Windows: use iTunes or the Apple Devices app → select iPhone → Back Up Now. Android: third-party tools such as Smart Switch (Samsung) or ADB backup for technical users provide more complete local backups than Android Backup Service alone. An encrypted local backup on iPhone — enabled by checking 'Encrypt local backup' in Finder or iTunes — includes additional data that standard iCloud Backup excludes: health and fitness data, saved passwords, and Wi-Fi network passwords. The local backup is most valuable as a fallback: if a cloud restore produces missing or incomplete data, the local version may be more recent or more complete.

Use phone-to-phone direct transfer if available — Apple's Quick Start or Android's data transfer

Direct transfer is typically the most complete migration method. Apple Quick Start: place the new iPhone near the old one during setup, scan the animation on the new phone with the old phone's camera, and select 'Transfer from iPhone.' Transfer happens over Wi-Fi or a direct cable connection and takes 30 minutes to several hours depending on data volume. Quick Start transfers apps, settings, app data, home screen layout, messages, and photos from local storage. It does not transfer Apple Pay cards (re-add manually) or authenticator app codes (handle separately). Android-to-Android: the setup wizard offers a 'Copy your data' step via cable or Wi-Fi, covering apps, settings, contacts, photos, and most app data. Cross-platform migrations: use 'Move to iOS' (Google Play app, run during Android setup) for Android-to-iPhone transfers, or Samsung Smart Switch for Samsung-specific migrations.

If not using direct transfer, restore from your most recent cloud backup

iPhone iCloud restore: during initial setup choose 'Restore from iCloud Backup' → sign in with Apple ID → select the most recent backup and verify its timestamp. Apps install in the background over the next 30–60 minutes — the phone is usable during this time, but some apps may show empty data until their download completes. Android Google backup restore: the setup wizard offers to restore from your last Google backup — select it and sign in. Not all app data restores immediately; apps restore settings and data progressively as they install. After the restore completes: verify contacts, messages, and photos are present before moving to the wipe phase. Specifically check app-stored data (game progress, app preferences), authentication states (apps requiring re-login), and health or fitness data.

Verify all data has transferred correctly — spot-check photos, contacts, messages, and key apps

Work through this verification before touching the old phone: scroll through photos to check recent shots and at least one older album; open Contacts and verify several entries are present with complete information; check that SMS and iMessage threads are visible with recent messages; confirm all important apps are installed; open apps that hold critical data — banking apps, notes apps, health apps — and confirm data is present. Finally, and critically, open the authenticator app on the new phone and verify that rotating codes are displaying and match the old phone for two or three services. This verification step is the last protection before an irreversible action — do not abbreviate it.

Sign out of iCloud on iPhone (or remove Google Account on Android) before factory reset

iPhone — sign out of iCloud first: Settings → [your name] → scroll down → Sign Out. This disables Find My iPhone and releases the device from Activation Lock. A factory reset performed without first signing out of iCloud leaves Activation Lock active — the device prompts for the original Apple ID and password on every restart, making it unusable by a new owner and ineligible for trade-in. Activation Lock cannot be removed remotely without the original Apple ID credentials. Android — remove Google Account before resetting: Settings → Google → Manage your Google Account (or Settings → Accounts → Google → Remove Account, depending on manufacturer). This removes Factory Reset Protection (FRP), Android's equivalent of Activation Lock, which requires the original Google account credentials on first boot after a reset. A phone sold with FRP active is locked to the previous owner's account and is effectively unusable.

Unpair connected devices — Apple Watch, Bluetooth headphones, smartwatches

Apple Watch: unpair the Watch from the old iPhone before setting up the new one. If you skip this step, the Watch must be manually reset to pair with the new phone. To unpair: on the old iPhone → Watch app → My Watch → your watch name → tap the info icon → Unpair. This triggers a final Watch backup to the phone before unpairing — when setting up the Watch with the new iPhone, you can restore from this backup. AirPods and other Apple Bluetooth devices: these re-pair automatically when you sign into the same Apple ID on the new iPhone. Third-party Bluetooth devices — headphones, speakers, car systems — must be manually re-paired with the new phone.

Perform the factory reset — 'Erase All Content and Settings' (iOS) or 'Factory Data Reset' (Android)

iPhone: Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Erase All Content and Settings. You'll be prompted to enter your passcode and confirm. The erase process takes 5–15 minutes. After completion, the phone displays the 'Hello' setup screen — this confirms Activation Lock was properly removed. If the phone instead displays 'iPhone is locked to [Apple ID]' after restart, Activation Lock was not removed before the reset; you'll need the original Apple ID credentials to clear it. Android: Settings → General Management → Reset → Factory Data Reset → Reset → Delete All (exact labels vary by manufacturer). The phone restarts to the initial setup screen after completion.

Remove the SIM card from the old phone before passing it on

The SIM card stores your phone number and carrier authentication data — it moves with you, not with the device. Physical SIM: use the SIM ejector tool (included in most new phone boxes) or a straightened paperclip in the SIM tray. SIM size varies by device: standard SIM, micro SIM, or nano SIM — verify the new phone's required size before transferring. eSIM: no physical transfer is needed. On the new phone, go to Settings → Mobile Data (or Cellular) → Add eSIM and follow your carrier's process; the old phone's eSIM becomes inactive when the new one is activated. For dual-SIM phones: verify which slot holds your active SIM before removing it.

Remove the microSD card if present on Android

Many Android phones support expandable storage via microSD. If you've stored photos, music, or other personal files on the card, remove it before selling or trading in — a factory reset does not erase the microSD card, and personal files remain on it. Insert the card into the new phone if it's compatible, or transfer contents to a computer or cloud storage first. If the old phone used 'Adoptable Storage' — a feature that formats the microSD as encrypted internal storage tied to that specific device — the card cannot be read by any other device and the data is not recoverable after a factory reset. If you used Adoptable Storage, treat the card's data as relying entirely on your cloud or local backups, not the card itself.

Trade in, sell, or recycle the wiped device — verify it shows the initial setup screen before handing it over

Before handing the device to anyone, boot it to confirm the initial setup screen appears — this verifies the erase succeeded and there's no active Activation Lock or Factory Reset Protection. Trade-in options: carrier programs (AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile — often the highest credit but tied to their service), manufacturer trade-in (Apple, Samsung — convenient, credit toward new devices), and third-party buyback services (Decluttr, Gazelle, SellCell — compare prices across services before committing). Peer-to-peer selling via eBay, Swappa, or Facebook Marketplace typically yields more value but requires more effort and carries buyer dispute risk. Recycling: if the device has no trade-in value, SERI R2-certified e-waste recyclers handle proper disposal — phones contain lithium, cobalt, and rare earth elements that should not go to landfill.

⏱️ Start the process 48 hours before setup day — not the morning of

A photo library of 20,000 images can take 4–8 hours to fully sync to iCloud or Google Photos on a typical home Wi-Fi connection. A video-heavy library can take considerably longer. The status indicator showing "backup enabled" only confirms the feature is on — it doesn't mean your current photos are synced. Starting the backup two days before your planned transfer date means you arrive at setup with a verified, complete copy rather than a progress bar still moving. This lead time also gives you a window to notice problems: storage quota limits, interrupted syncs, or connectivity issues that would otherwise surface only when you need the backup most.

🔄 iPhone → Android: the ecosystem boundary issues

iMessage history doesn't transfer to Android. Blue-bubble conversations exist only in Apple's infrastructure — once your number leaves iMessage, contacts who text you on iMessage may not realize their messages aren't reaching you. Before switching, use Apple's official Deregister iMessage tool at appleid.apple.com to remove your number from the system, or contacts may send messages that disappear silently. Paid iOS apps have no Android equivalents — in-app purchases, game progress stored app-side, and paid apps must be repurchased on Android if equivalents exist.

🔄 Android → iPhone: the Google handoff

Google Photos, Gmail, and Google Drive migrate cleanly — sign into your Google account on the new iPhone and the content is accessible immediately. Google Wallet payment methods need to be added to Apple Pay separately. RCS messages (Android's messaging protocol) remain in Google Messages and don't migrate to iMessage history. Paid Google Play apps and in-app purchases don't transfer; subscription apps that exist on both platforms generally require resubscribing through the App Store's billing system.

🚨 Recovery paths if something went wrong

Restore is incomplete or apps are missing data after setup:

iCloud restores install apps progressively and can take 1–2 hours on slower connections — check the App Store for an active download queue before concluding data is missing. If data is genuinely absent after a full restore, a local encrypted backup (if made) often includes data that cloud backups exclude, and can be restored via Finder or iTunes.

Activation Lock showing after factory reset:

Enter the original Apple ID credentials to unlock. If you have access to the Apple ID, visit appleid.apple.com → Devices → select and remove the device. If the password is lost, Apple Support's account recovery process typically takes 24–72 hours and requires proof of purchase (original receipt or order confirmation).

Locked out of accounts due to missing authenticator codes:

Start with SMS fallback if configured on the account, then search for backup codes saved when 2FA was originally set up — these are typically 8–10 digit codes in a downloaded text file or notes app. If neither is available, each major service (Google, Microsoft, banks) has an identity verification recovery flow. List every affected account, prioritize by criticality, and work through each service's recovery process methodically — most resolve within 24–48 hours.

💰 Trade-in timing: when you sell matters as much as where

Trade-in values typically drop 15–30% within weeks of a new flagship announcement. A phone that commands $350 in August can fall to $240 by November after the next model ships — the market reprices the moment new hardware is announced. The highest-value window for your current device is the two to three weeks before the new model is available, when carriers are competing aggressively with trade-in promotions to drive pre-orders. After launch, values stabilize at a lower floor and rarely recover.

Condition grades used by most buyback services break down roughly as: Excellent (no visible scratches, all functions working), Good (minor cosmetic wear only), Fair (visible scratches or small screen damage), and Poor (cracked screen or hardware faults). On a recent flagship, the difference between Excellent and Fair is typically $50–$150. A tempered glass screen protector applied from day one — usually $10–$15 — routinely preserves the condition needed for the top grade when the upgrade window comes.
